NIKKA was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, who is widely regarded as being the father of Japanese Whisky.
He was born in 1894 to a family of sake producers. After having studied chemistry, he was hired by the Settsu Shuzo company, which was planning on producing the first authentic Japanese whisky. Young Taketsuru was sent to Scotland in 1919 to learn the ropes. There he found a new passion for Whisky and decided to dedicate his life to it. He return to Japan and established the first Japanese Whisky Distillery - the Yamazaki Distillery - for Suntory instead. In 1934 he decided to go it alone, and he built Yoichi, his first distillery, on the island of Hokkaido. His growing success allowed him to build a second distillery, Miyagikyo, on the island of Honshu in 1969. The single malts produced by these two distilleries were the foundation on which the Nikka Whisky group’s Japanese whisky range was based. The Yoichi Malts are known for their rich, peaty, masculinity with strong maritime notes. The Miyagikyo malts are soft, flowery and light.
Nikka was awarded the World Whisky Producer of the Year in 2015 at the International Spirits Challenge. It also received 13 medals for its whiskies with Gold Medals for: Takesturu 21 and 25 Years, Nikka Coffey Malt and Grain Whiskies, and Nikka from the Barrel.
In 2016, Koichi Nishikawa, the Yoichi Distillery Manager, won the Icons of Whisky Distillery Manager of the Year.
